That standard requires a disciplined process, not a quick coat of paint over existing doors.

Start by Deciding Whether Cabinets Are Good Candidates

Refinishing is appropriate when cabinet boxes and doors are structurally sound, the layout still works, and the goal is a visual update rather than a complete redesign. Solid wood, MDF, and many previously painted cabinet doors can be refinished successfully. Sanding then dulls the existing sheen and provides mechanical tooth. The correct grit depends on the current finish and the condition of the substrate. Use a Primer That Matches the Substrate

Stained wood may need a stain-blocking primer. Previously painted doors may require a high-adhesion bonding primer. MDF edges often need special attention because they absorb material quickly and can become rough if they are not sealed properly.

Apply Cabinet Coatings in Controlled Conditions

Cabinet products need strong adhesion, a hard cured film, and enough flow to level cleanly. Color and sheen also need to be selected with the rest of the home in mind. During that period, cabinets should be treated carefully. Avoid scrubbing with harsh cleaners, hanging damp towels over doors, or forcing doors shut if alignment needs adjustment. Soft-close hardware should be checked after reinstallation, and doors should be adjusted for consistent reveals. A premium finish can still look careless if spacing is uneven or a door rubs against its neighbor.

Common Shortcuts That Undermine the Result

The most visible cabinet failures often begin with decisions that seemed minor at the time. Painting over grease, skipping primer, applying heavy coats to save time, and reinstalling doors too soon all create avoidable risk. So does treating every substrate as if it responds the same way.

Humidity, temperature, and airflow also affect the finish. In a lived-in home, the work must be planned around cooking, pets, children, and access to the kitchen.
